An intense and original story, the novel was published in 1847. Emily Bronte was so vary of fame and attention that she wrote the novel using the pen name Ellis Bell. The story is set in 1801 and begins with Mr. Lockwood renting out the estate Thrushcross Grange. Mr. Heathcliff is the landlord living at Wuthering Heights, the adjoining estate. Once while visiting Wuthering Heights, Mr. Lockwood is stranded there on account of a snow storm. He meets Heathcliff’s daughter-in-law Cathy and her cousin Hareton Earnshaw. On his way back to Thrushcross Grange, he is bit by a dog and is forced to stay behind at Wuthering Heights. He spends his time reading from the journal of Catherine, Cathy’s mother. He is curious to know further about the family and asks his serving lady to tell him the story. Heathcliff is an orphan raised by Mr. Earnshaw at Wuthering heights. Hindley and Catherine are his children. Catherine and Heathcliff are very much inseparable but she is unable to adjust to his level, as he is made to work as a hired hand. Hindley’s wife died and left behind Hareton, their son. Heathcliff is devastated by Catherine’s rebuke and storms out of Wuthering Heights. Catherine falls sick and in nursed back to good health by Edgar who later marries her. She is happy for a few months but could never forget Heathcliff who soon returns a rich man. He in intent on taking revenge and uses the wealth he has amassed to pressurize Hindley into debt. To spite Catherine, he marries Isabelle, Edgar’s sister, who he does not love. Catherine falls ill but meets Heathley just before she dies. She gives birth to a daughter Cathy. A research paper on how Heathley’s character changes after this would make interesting reading.
Cathy inherits Thrushcross Grange as there is no male heir. Heathley takes over Wuthering Heights after Hindley’s death. Hareton is mistreated by Heathley because of his father as revenge was foremost in Heathley’s mind. Isabelle wants Edgar to take care of her son Linton, but Heathley calls him over to Wuthering Heights. He does not like his own son, but wants further revenge by seeing him marry Cathy. When she comes over to Wuthering Heights when Linton falls sick, Heathley forces her to marry Linton. Cathy relents as her father falls ill, but Edgar dies and so does Linton. Cathy is now a daughter-in-law of a man who had come back to seek revenge. Mr. Lockwood returns to find Heathley dead. Cathy and Hareton have fallen in love. The Wuthering Heights essay should picture the ending where Mr. Lockwood notices tranquility existing in the moors after the turbulence that existed when Heathley lived.
