National Peace Essay Contest

The Role Of National Peace Essay Contest

The National Peace Essay Contest is held every year by The United States Institute of Peace to promote peace, harmony, and good will. The topic announced for the period 2010-2011 is Governance, Corruption, and Conflict. Students would be given the essay question, “For those who hope to prevent violent conflict, how can their efforts to reduce, if not eliminate, corruption best contribute to building sustainable peace using two cases of countries in transition from war to peace?” The institute has made in worthwhile for students to participate in the contest by offering cash prizes. Three National awards are given to first, second, and third place winners comprising of $10,000, $5,000, and $2,500. There are 53 state awards with a first place award of $1,000 each.

Students around the world have a big role to play in promoting peace and harmony among people. National Peace Essay Contests provide the platform for students, teachers, aspiring and national leaders to come together and discuss ways and means to end conflict in the world.  First-placed state winners have a great opportunity to interact with other winners in Washington. They get completely free package and discuss the theme related to the current essay topic, i.e., Governance, Corruption, and Conflict. There are mock sessions where students assume leadership roles, discuss vital issues, and offer solutions. They get a chance to meet current leaders involved in international affairs and learn from their experiences. To sum it up, they have a gala time being entertained, visiting historic sites, and eating out at ethnic restaurants.

This year’s topic is of great importance as corruption and conflict is visible everywhere. The seeds of corruption has given rise to people involved in international gunrunning, forming a drug mafia, and spreading fear with terrorism. There seems to be no end to this. Students have a chance to discuss these issues and offer practical solutions that could be implemented universally. For example, students could be involved in resolving disputes in their home town. The methods used to do so could be discussed, analyzed, improved upon, and proposed as a solution for similar problems elsewhere. The United Nations and The United States have always sought to resolve world issues through discussion and active participation with different countries. Their role can be more useful if they can suggest practical solutions to problems. The National Peace Essay Contest provides ample scope to analyze the different options open.

Entries for the contest have to be submitted by Feb. 1, 2011. Students can compile a 1,500 word essay writing on two countries in the past two decades, one having achieved peace after a long period of strife and war, while the other didn’t. The methods used by third-party negotiators to resolve issues could be analyzed. Corruption has had a role to play in delaying peacemaking efforts. The reasons that led to corruption can be studied. National Peace and Essay Contests can be summarized by offering recommendations to the specific questions mentioned under the topic. Students can make use of the guidebook for requirements and a reference essay written by a past national winner.
