Exploratory Essay

An exploratory essay is an essay written spontaneously without worrying about how it is going to turn out eventually. It literally is exploring and finding out about topics never dealt with before. It can be exciting stuff, if there is no pressure of you being assessed for it. Imagine yourself writing a research paper on an unknown topic. It would take ages. Eventually, you would not be sure of the outcome, unless you know how to go about it. This is a work-in-progress which gets better as you practice writing on different topics. You gather inputs on how to explore, research, and learn the processes and principles involved in the shortest possible time. An exploratory essay would be able to assess students’ approach to new topics. They would have to come up with ideas, and should be able to express themselves clearly. The process of forming the structure and using tested methods therefore is very important to understand how to write a good essay.

It is exciting to write on a new topic. It would be a learning process and a source of gathering knowledge. Some difficulties may arise, if you are not at all familiar with the topic. Depending on the purpose of writing the essay, students should therefore start off by writing on a familiar topic. You may not have detailed knowledge about it but need to have an inclination on how to proceed. For example, if you are fond of sports, make an attempt to write on it even if you have not made any previous attempt. The advantage here is that you would have more knowledge about how to proceed than say someone who is not into sports.

Plan out how you would approach the topic. Make a conscious effort to build up interest in it with the same tempo as you learn about it. The introduction would allow you to place the thesis statement, which would give readers a general idea of the topic. Some general ideas gathered through research can also be added. The body of the essay would elaborate on your ideas. Research has to be thorough as information has to be factual and elaborate. Readers should be able to understating your point of view as they continue reading the essay.

Prepare an outline that addresses all possible questions that can arise out of the thesis statement. These questions should be listed and answers provided in the order of importance. The right way to go about it is to ask questions about the topic and list them down. Each question can then be answered accordingly. For example, the exploratory essay could write about a recent discovery made in a field you are familiar with. The various advantages and disadvantages of it could then be listed for the benefit of readers. The essay writing exercise would ensure that you would have learned about the topic in great detail thereby enhancing your knowledge about it. At the same time, it would make interesting reading. Back your statements with quotes from experts in the field. It would add relevance to your point of view.
